開催概要

本セミナーでは、BioJapan当日の交流促進を図ることを目的として、事前に来日企業等の各社に、それぞれの取り組みをご紹介いただきます。

多くの方は、一度は耳にしたことのあるBio Base Europe Pilot Plantかと思いますが、ベルギー・ヘントに拠点を置き、研究室レベルの革新的な技術を実用化・事業化へつなげる、欧州を代表するオープンアクセス型のバイオプロセス開発・パイロット施設です。バイオものづくりにおける「Valley of Death」を越えるため、プロセス開発、スケールアップ、パイロット実証、カスタム製造までを一貫して支援可能で、スタートアップから大企業、研究機関まで幅広く連携し、技術・事業リスクの低減と商業化を加速しています。

演題名 ：The Road to Commercialization: Overcoming the Valley of Death

講演者 ：Dr. Rakesh Nair氏（Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, Business Development Manager）

要旨 ：

Transforming breakthrough research and discoveries into commercially viable biobased products remains one of the greatest challenges in the bioeconomy. While many innovative technologies demonstrate strong potential at laboratory scale, a significant fraction fail to progress to commercial application due to technical, financial, and operational barriers commonly referred to as the "Valley of Death". Successfully crossing this gap requires more than scientific excellence, it demands robust process development, pilot-scale validation, de-risking strategies, and access to industrial-scale demonstration infrastructure.

This presentation will explore how pilot and demonstration facilities play a critical role in enabling innovators to navigate this challenging transition by providing integrated expertise in process development, scale-up, and custom manufacturing. It will discuss how pilot-scale activities help identify and resolve scale-dependent challenges, validate process performance and economics, generate material for product qualification, and build the technical confidence required for industrial investment and commercialization.

The presentation will also highlight the importance of open-access pilot infrastructure in accelerating innovation across the bioeconomy, reducing technical and financial risk, and fostering collaboration between academia, start-ups, SMEs, large industrial companies, investors, and public stakeholders. In addition, it will discuss emerging trends in industrial biotechnology, including digitalization, advanced process monitoring, sustainable manufacturing, and the growing role of pilot and demonstration facilities in supporting transition towards a circular and climate-neutral bioeconomy.
